When De’rren “Wicked” Clouden
sets himself to task good things are bound to happen; and his latest endeavor Big Impact Entertainment, is not exception.
Wicked realizes that drive and ambition alone, merely aren’t enough to make it in today’s cut throat record
industry. Being no novice- how could you be after selling over 76,000 units- he understands that beyond insurmountable
passion to succeed, it is essential to obtain a firm foundation, a clear vision, and a top notch team to aid you along.
Don’t be fooled, this isn’t a tale of a starry-eyed kid blinded by the myth of fame. No, this is the prologue
documenting a “gudda” kid done good. The adventures of a man who would one day reign as king, despite being surrounded
by pretenders to the thrown.Big Impacts’ genesis of course takes place in the past. Unlike, many of his contemporaries,
Wicked isn’t privy the luxury of fictionalizing his tales of struggle. If you ever hear him make an utterance of
tragedy, be assured every syllable is true. Getting his start in the early ‘90s, Wicked was signed to the now
defunct imprint Bull Dog Records where he sat on the roster for three years. After having a less than satisfying run with
the company, he left for a seemingly brighter prospect with Big Boy Records, Boot Camp Clique; a project featuring not
only himself but, the prolific artist Mystical and Black Menace. Luck would have it that the group would not see much
light, two weeks after completing the album the label came under federal investigation. Later, that year Wicked found
himself in a venture with a relative that lead to less than satisfactory results and much disappointment. It goes with
out saying that a roller coaster of highs and tragic lows plagued Wicked in the coming years. He would soon find tutelage
producing music for adult films, gaining not only a strong portfolio and business know-how, but would also earn him
an AVN Award. With out fail in the wind fall of success swept tragedy. This time fate found Wicked jailed. At this particular
stage most individuals would see this an end. Not many are able to withstand of such a tumultuous life, it takes a great
deal of character and tenacity to do what Wicked did next. While, serving his sentence instead of becoming embittered,
he found new passion. Wicked was not only capable of making sense of his current situation, he was now able to see beyond
it. He saw the failings of those before him. He was able to visualize a life righting with in himself, that in which
his environment was wrong. He in other words he let prison be his place of reform; and fortunately for the rest of us
this had little to do with concrete and bars. Along with his cohort Jay Starr, Wicked was read to make and everlasting
imprint on his community. Their venture Big Impact Entertainment, is reforming the way record labels are run. These
young men realize that a company such as this serves a microcosm of what is happening in the “gudda”. As
critics of the system they make a concerted effort to be positive influences on society and started at the top with a
Wicked in place as unwaveringly strong leader. This can be found in countless articles and interviews where Wicked
preaches the gospel of Big Impact, proselytizing the need for a familial corporate structure. In turn the Big Impact
Army (calling them artist is simply an exercise in understatement) have a high set of standards to live by. Every track
laid down must not reach for but, aim above a very strict moral code. Dare to call these artist role models because, they
are. And they proudly wear their status as badges of honour and courage, unlike most of their colleagues. Every man and
woman from the janitor to the CEO are under a mandate not only to represent change but, to embody it. Artist on the
Big Impact roster face unique challenges. They some how effortlessly maintain the aspects of being positive role models while
understanding above all that the block is real. In turn, their founders manage to retain a familial yet, business like atmosphere.
As artist and businessmen they understand that there is a delicate balance involved in running their venture. As thus,
not only are the contracts fair but so is the discipline. In 2005, with the eminent release of the
‘i-Wicked E.P.’ we come to find
that their philosophy extends past the microphone and into the mixing booth. Wicked had the foresight to to sign on the
renowned Jay Polo (Pope) to mine not only his vast musical skills but, his strengths in all things media. On first
listen you can hear passion for the music and their eclectic, dare say even eccentric taste in music, ranging from jazz
to experimental forms of IDM (intelligent dance music). Of course this experimenting lends itself ti the understanding
that while the message is important is also a top priority to have fun and love what you’re doing. And they
definitely are proving that.
